Pelican Action

Feeding time for these #pelicans at Lake Kerkini in Greece.

A fast shutter speed, split-second timing, and lots of photos meant that i ended up with a series of cool shots. Here's one that I like 😊

Did you know i have a section for #birdphotography in my How-To Guide? Check it out today. And see below the photo for more details about how this photo was created...

The story goes that in the winter at this man-made lake, the fish are hiding in the deep water. The pelicans find it tough to catch the fish, so the fishermen go out early in the morning to catch fish and then feed the birds. I'm not sure if the story is true or not, or wif it's just told to tourists.

Nevertheless, for a small fee we got to go out on the small boat (like a bif canoe) with the fisherman at feeding time. He would throw the fish in the air, and the pelicans would come right up to the boat to catch their breakfast. I took a LOT of photos that morning. I have a series of favourites that I will show at various times on this blog. Some of them look like ballet. It was a truly memorable morning out on the water in mid-winter in northern Greece. Fun fact - on the edge of the lake is the largest herd of buffalo in Greece!
